There is a consensus among business thought leaders that organizations must focus on more than just profit to be successful. A growing body of research shows that both employees and customers are more loyal to leaders and organizations that have a compelling higher purpose.
Unfortunately, most leaders have no way to act on this knowledge. According to HBR, 50% of corporate managers distrust their company’s vision.
Mary is standing on the terrace taking in the fresh air looking on as the small but joyful crowd is sipping expensive wine and munching on premium aged cheese in the lounge. This is the end of the board retreat she produced and headlined. They loved it, and she is glowing! Actually she looks like she is hovering 2 inch above the floor!
Mary is on the couch in my office and we are...
In one of my favorite research projects, scientists from Harvard showed the very practical implications of changing our story. Eighty-four hotel maids were divided into two groups. Researchers carefully examined the daily tasks of the workers, determining how many calories those tasks burned. Members of the group were told that the activities they performed every day met the surgeon general's definition of an active lifestyle, but the members of the second group weren’t given any information.
Do you enjoy reading the news these days? I - not so much. This week I realized why: I am in opposition. I am on the outside. Being on the opposite side, being on the outside is being without love.
I realized my pain comes from being out of love with the world. Let me explain.
Imagine you and me standing on the deck of an ocean liner slipping across the Atlantic from London to New York straight as the crow flies. As it cuts through the wavelets, the massive ship shifts 0.1 degrees to the left.
“I know everything about everything, yet I can't change my behavior.” - said Peter, a client in San Francisco, through gritted teeth.
I met his eyes and started nodding inadvertently. That was exactly how I felt before I started exploring the borders of my consciousness.
The human brain is wired for trance. Just imagine that when we turn on the lights at night, our ancestors turned on their minds. They journeyed into faraway places and strange lands in the tales and stories they told and retold to each other. They journeyed with others or they relived these journeys in their own minds....
My mentor has super smart friend, a brilliant young woman who recently got married and her baby is 4 months old now. Last week she reached for her teacup one morning and could not lift it. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) starts like this, out of the blue. The immune system starts to...
Hello, my name is Laszlo Karafiath, I am 44 years old, and I am a conscious leader. My purpose is to lead more leaders towards more consciousness.
Okay, so what does that really mean?
For me a leader is...
“I hate Liza. I hate her voice. I hate her whining. I don't want any good to happen to her. I want to spoil her fun!”
Liza is my client and in our session suddenly an inner saboteur showed up, this is her voice. She showed up around a conference table in Liza’s mind as an outside character, dressed as a black witch...
"I simply can't take time away from work. I am too important! I have too much to do!"
Well, you are wrong! I know it because I was just as wrong when I was thinking the same things. Back when I was doing my 7-day workweeks of 16-hour workdays at one of my startups. And I would crash and burn if I didn’t take time off.
“Something prevents me to live as I want to live” - exclaims Liza. She is a very successful and super smart UX designer in her late 30's.
“Like today in the morning: I wanted to go to the gym, but there again was that part of me saying take it easy, lets look at more emails, maybe check Facebook... just take your time, don't do anything… Lets just do nothing, that is the best!”
“Oh no… do we really have to go back to my childhood to fix this?” “Can’t we do this any other way?”
I often hear this, like now, when we sit down to set leadership goals for my CEO client. She feels she could bring a lot more out of her team. In our session the obstacles show themselves and they too originate in her childhood.
Early negative programming happens, well, early. But why? How can messages stick with us for decades?!
"When you sing root your feet down and touch them with an energetic touch. This is your trigger to be brave! Have fun! It's like a party!" - This is my client Vivienne's inner singer who we contacted in a session. Vivienne is a beautiful petite woman and her inner singer is a big black African-American lady, her name is Betty. She goes on: "You are singing for the people you love. It's not hard... this if FUN!"
My client has stage fright....
Over the last 22 years, I helped start Sziget Festival (Central Europe’s largest music festival), I created and sold an award-winning multi-million digital agency and as of the last 15 months, I have coached 212 clients -- these all share one immutable fact: I help others…help themselves.
I love to help clients help themselves get better, have fun, get rich, and live happier lives...
Raise your hand if you think of yourself as a collection of many different selves.
“I'd bet a dollar to donuts that 99% of your clients do not think about themselves this way" remarked Tom, a client of mine in last week's session.
After I explain to my new clients what I am about to explain to you they immediately...
"I don't have the time for silly ideas. Fuck me. I need you to execute. Do you understand me?"
Meet Thomas. This is how he speaks to his employees at his startup.
After our first session, we get access to the many voices inside of Thomas, we meet Glum Thomas, who regrets these sorts of impatient outbursts. But Glum Thomas is incapable of stopping Commander Thomas from telling off his employees whenever he feels like it....
“She was part of me, I was part of her. I cannot let her go. She was stronger… then I became the strong one. She was on her deathbed for 9 weeks. I still have the smell of the hospital in my nose.”
Michelle lost her twin sister seven years ago. She spent three years paralyzed after being in a horrible car-crash. Michelle lost her job taking care of her and now after all these years she still cannot get on with her life. She thinks about her twin every day, maybe every waking hour...
“So after a few sessions I will never suffer these sort of pain again…. ever?
Justin is an art director at a premier ad agency. He suffers from a type of separation anxiety: whenever a deadline comes and he has to part with his work he is beset with crippling anxiety.
With his earnest eyes wide, he prods, "No fear? No anxiety? All gone?”
"My husband will either go crazy, divorce me or both. To be honest, I get it. I nag him. Incessantly. I am unbearable, really.
"But you know what? That’s just me. That is just how I am. It's tragic, I suppose -- but I guess he's gotta to learn to live with it or get out." -- explains Jackie with a sad smile on her face.
